Visit to the FRM II research reactor (please notice new date)

  • Date: Sep 24, 2025
  • Time: 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM (Local Time Germany)
  • Location: Garching

The Forschungs-Neutronenquelle Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) is a Corporate Research Center of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) located on the premises of the modern research campus in Garching.

Here, neutrons and positrons enable a wide range of applications in research, industry and medicine: from developing new technologies, such as batteries for electric cars, to precise anti-cancer drugs.

During our visit, we will have the opportunity to:

  • Take a look into the reactor pool
  • Learn more about the non-destructive analysis of materials using neutrons
  • Discover how radioisotopes are used in medicine

Topics covered during the visit will include:

  • Who works at the FRM II research neutron source?
  • How does a high-performance research reactor work?
  • What is radioactivity, and where do we encounter it in everyday life?
  • Why do scientists conduct research with neutrons?
  • Why are radioisotopes/radiopharmaceuticals used for cancer therapy?
  • Why can bacteria become resistant to antibiotics?
If you are interested in joining, please contact Lena Beggel.
Please notice that this event has been postponed from June 20 to September 24.
