Visit to the FRM II research reactor

  • Date: Jun 20, 2025
  • Time: 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM (Local Time Germany)
  • Location: Garching

The Forschungs-Neutronenquelle Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) is a Corporate Research Center of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) located on the premises of the modern research campus in Garching.

Here, neutrons and positrons enable a wide range of applications in research, industry and medicine: from developing new technologies, such as batteries for electric cars, to precise anti-cancer drugs.

During our visit, we will have the opportunity to:

  • Take a look into the reactor pool
  • Learn more about the non-destructive analysis of materials using neutrons
  • Discover how radioisotopes are used in medicine

Topics covered during the visit will include:

  • Who works at the FRM II research neutron source?
  • How does a high-performance research reactor work?
  • What is radioactivity, and where do we encounter it in everyday life?
  • Why do scientists conduct research with neutrons?
  • Why are radioisotopes/radiopharmaceuticals used for cancer therapy?
  • Why can bacteria become resistant to antibiotics?
