Sunshine, Snow and Science
Our annual meeting did not only feature diverse weather, but also diverse research topics from our doctoral candidates.

From snowflakes to grey skies to sunshine – our annual IMPRS-APS meeting at the stunning Schloss Ringberg this week had it all, all in just three days!
This meeting is always a fantastic opportunity for our doctoral candidates to connect, exchange ideas, and dive into in each other’s research. While light plays a crucial role in our students’ work, the topics are incredibly diverse – from quantum mechanical modeling of photochemistry to field-resolved molecular fingerprinting and single-shot laser characterization, as highlighted in the presentations at Schloss Ringberg.
In addition to research presentations and building connections, this year’s annual meeting featured two standout sessions. Nils-Holger Haag, CEO of PULSED GmbH, shared his entrepreneurial journey and the challenges of navigating the first three years of running a startup. His presentation was met with great interest from our students, who engaged in lively discussions about the realities of startup life and everyday challenges.
In addition, trainer Daniel Mertens, also a Leukemia researcher at the DKFZ German Cancer Research Center, led an interactive workshop on leveraging AI for thesis and grant writing. Using real examples from our PhD students, this session was both practical and engaging, leaving participants equipped with valuable tools to support their academic journeys and beyond.
Our participants described the annual meeting as “enlightening”, “relaxed” and “grounding.” For IMPRS-APS, this gathering is always the highlight of the year, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s event at Schloss Ringberg!
