Congratulations to Jannik Esslinger!

March 23, 2026

Jannik has successfully defended his thesis in the group of Dr. habil. Andreas Döpp.

We are happy to share that Jannik Esslinger has successfully defended his thesis titled “Physics-Informed Diagnostics for Ultra-Intense Laser Pulses” in the group of Andreas Döpp!

Ultra-intense laser pulses allow to accelerate particles on short length scales, but measuring them is not easy. In his thesis, Jannik tackled various key challenges for characterizing these extreme laser pulses, such as finding the best basis to describe these pulses, how to measure them without modifying their structure in the attenuation, and how to obtain more information from each shot in the case of low repetition rate. Within the thesis, Jannik designed, tested and calibrated new diagnostic devices for the ATLAS-3000 laser at the Centre for Advanced Laser Applications in Garching.

Reflecting on his PhD journey, Jannik shared: "Undoubtedly, the PhD is a tough period that requires a lot of stamina in the end - but overall, I really enjoyed the various challenges it includes. I am very grateful for the support of IMPRS-APS, I especially enjoyed the yearly meetings at Ringberg. I wish my fellow students and colleagues all the best and good luck with their theses.”

Dear Jannik, we also wish you all the best for your future and everything that it holds for you!
